Nokia Will Makes Windows 7 Phones- Making WP7 Primary Smartphone Platform
Once upon a time Nokia was selling two-third of the world’s mobile phone. But the things started to change when other manufacturers like Sony or Samsung started to playing on mobile field seriously. Then in 2007, Apple joined in the race and made the place even harder than ever. On 2010 Nokia has lost 10% market share, dropping from 38% at the beginning of 2010 to 28% by the year’s end. It is a horrible scenario for a leading company like Nokia.
By this time Google Android mobile OS are gaining market share quickly. Many other mobile phone manufacturers like HTC, Samsung, Motorola and Sony Ericsson are starting to use Android as their primary Mobile Phone OS. These mobile giants also released phones powered by Microsoft new mobile OS, Windows Phone 7 last year. But the results are not satisfying as they expected.
In the meantime Nokia stack with their Symbian Mobile OS platform and MeeGo. But as everyone see they are losing market to Android. So both this two giants are ready to work together now. Software giant Microsoft and Mobile Phone giant Nokia announce they will work for each other from now. Nokia will make Windows Phone 7 OS based smartphones from now and will make it their primary mobile OS.
Following a memo that chief executive Stephen Elop sent to all employees this week announcing that, Nokia is in crisis, Nokia will now see its Symbian OS relegated to its low-end devices.
In the statement Elop said “Nokia is at a critical juncture, where significant change is necessary and inevitable in our journey forward. Today, we are accelerating that change through a new path, aimed at regaining our smartphone leadership, reinforcing our mobile device platform and realizing our investments in the future.”
Nokia has also restructured both its management team and its core businesses, which will be split into two core divisions from 1st April.
In Nokia WP7 phones Microsoft’s Bing services will power Nokia’s search services. Nokia Maps would be at the core of mapping on their Windows Phone handsets. It was also confirmed that Nokia’s app store will be integrated into the Windows Phone Marketplace. While Microsoft will provide additional development tools for people who want to write bespoke apps for the Nokia handsets.
Nevertheless this is excellent news for consumers. Imagine World’s best phone now using the world’s most popular operating system. It should be wonderful if everything works fine now.
But this news also raises question over the future of Nokia’s MeeGo mobile platform development project with Intel.
